Spring Clean Your LIFE!

by Kathy Gates, May 2002

A lot of what we do in our lives as adults is a product of habit, a way of doing things that has worked in the past. And sometimes those HABITS grow old and tiresome. Our minds are much like our homes. They both need a routine cleaning out of stuff that we collected for one reason, and are holding onto out of habit or neglect.

I truly believe that there is a higher form of motivation than the “shoulds”, “havetos,” and “oughtas.” If something in your life isn't working the way you want it to, look at your HABIT of response.

Pursuing happiness means that you have to CHOOSE it. When you're ready to free yourself from the junk that clutters up your mental “hall closet”, you'll be free to like and appreciate yourself, as well as others.

  1. Clean out the anger, hatred, jealousy and self doubt.
  2. Move out the frustrations and lack of communication. Wash away delay and procrastination.
  3. Dust off your attitude and put on a fresh coat of positive.
  4. Throw out misunderstanding and lack of patience. Sweep out the dirt of gossip or lies.
  5. Recycle old relationships, roles and routines that no longer work into a new, useable form.
  6. Open the shades and let in the warmth of friendship.
  7. Lighten up your thoughts with humor and fun.
  8. Give away as much love, help, care, concern and gratitude as possible.
  9. Paint in new boundaries and stencil some raised standards.
  10. Open the windows of your mind to new ideas and a fresh perspective on living a happier, better, easier life.
