The Healing Energy of Nature

by Bobbie Hurst, September 2001

Our souls are so intricately connected with nature that simply being in nature can bring us a sense of peace and calm, lower our blood pressure, heal us and elevate our mood. But you can take that healing energy one step further by using a few simple techniques.

Technique #1
One of my favorite methods of finding inner balance is to watch the trees sway and dance in a gentle breeze. I try to match my rhythm and breath rate with the speed of the moving branches. Sometimes, I even sway with the branches to deepen the effect. If you acknowledge the life energy in trees (and plants), you can feel their response to the wind and other elements. In a strong wind, the leaves actually appear to be clapping with excitement. This excitement is infectious, and you can tap into it easily by drawing it to yourself.

Technique #2
Another method is to sit with your back up against a tree trunk. You'll be able to feel the support and power of the tree. Close your eyes and imagine blending with the tree until you feel as though you are inside the trunk. Now, imagine the tree's roots are your roots. Visualize the healing energy from the earth coming up the roots into your body. Send any stress and anxiety you may be experiencing down the roots and ground it into the earth.

Technique #3
Seek out places that contain negative ions such as waterfalls, the beach or a pine forest. A negative ion environment can improve your mood substantially. Positive, healthful energy is increased anywhere where two land elements converge, such as the beach where water and earth meet, or around the shore of a lake or pond. Scientists from all over the world have conducted studies on the effects of negative ion rich environments and have concluded that by spending as little as 15 minutes per day in this type of environment can improve hay fever and asthma, kill bacteria, and provide you with a sense of well-being.

If you haven't spent some quality time with nature lately, may I suggest you take yourself out soon and simply breathe? If you cannot get away, close your eyes and listen to some calming mood music and "imagine" being in nature. Try not to get too far away from nature; it is the greatest healing force on earth.
